Kit Donnelly was born in Freeport, Long Island, and grew up in North Carolina and New Jersey. Her first love of art came from copying children's book illustrations for hours while seven years old. As a teenager Kit took her first art classes. She attended the Rhode Island School of Design while a high school student.

She then went to art school at the Portland School of Art (now Maine College of Art) and got a degree from the San Francisco Art Institute.
